ATP World No. 1 Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal, No. 2 in the INDESIT ATP Rankings, could clash in the Davis Cup first round between February 9-11, 2007, as Switzerland were handed a home tie to Spain at the draw ceremony in Rome on Thursday.
Switzerland has been drawn at home. The two nations have met in the international men’s team competition four times and Spain holds a 3-1 lead.
Argentina, who will play in their second Davis Cup final against Russia in December, has been drawn to play Austria away. Since Argentina returned to the World Group in 2002 the nation has reached at least the quarterfinals or better.
Russia, who won the Davis Cup title over France in Paris in 2002, has a tough draw with a trip to Chile.
The United States, who won its 31st and last Davis Cup title in Moscow in 1995, has been drawn against the Czech Republic. Last year’s champion’s Croatia will travel to Germany.
